Good news everyone! There is some light throughout all the Konami / Kojima debacle. It has been revealed that the much anticipated return of Metal Gear Online, as part of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, will support up to 16 players on current gen systems, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Those hoping to go head-to-head at the game’s release on September 1 on previous gen systems, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, will have support up to 12 players.

This recent discovery comes courtesy of VideoGamer.com, by way of the Japanese Metal Gear Solid website. We saw just a preview of Metal Gear Online’s capabilities in their recent gameplay trailer at the Video Game Awards. It’s a spectacular hint at what’s to come, and with up to 16 players, it’s sure to be quite a tactically blissful, multiplayer experience.

We’re still a long ways away until the big debut of Metal Gear Solid 5, but from what we know, gamers will be able to utilize many different customizable skins while playing as Snake, Ocelot, and general mercenary types. By having this many opponents on the field, with a varying degree of weapons and fun tech, this online feature should keep gamers busy finding innovative ways to take down the other team.

I never had the chance to play MGO when it appeared on Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, I was more invested in beating the solo campaign on extreme, but I am looking forward to what this new iteration will bring.

Here’s the official plot synopsis for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, courtesy of Konami:

The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan has brought a new edge to the Cold War, and in 1984, a one-eyed man with a prosthetic arm appears in the country. Those who know him call him Snake; the ledgendary mercenary who was once swept from the stage of history and left in a coma by American private intelligence network Cipher. Snake is accompanied by Ocelot, an old friend who saved him from attack when he finally awoke. Now, Snake’s former partner Kazuhira Miller is being held by the Soviet forces in Afghanistan. Snake must undertake a solo mission to rescue Miller and prove to the world that the legendary mercenary is not dead and gone. The first step will lead to a path of vengeance against the very Cipher that slaughtered so many of Snake’s men, and to battle that will embroil the whole world… What started in Ground Zeroes… must finish with “V.”

Directed by Hideo Kojima, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is set to release on September 1, 2015 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One; for PC on September 15.
